PDF to Word
Jan. 26th, 2006 01:08 pmI've got one PDF-to-Word package that gets the Croatian characters (šđžčć) mostly right, but puts everything in cute little frames (the ones it doesn't get right, it at least uses unique punctuation characters for), and another PDF-to-Word package that doesn't use the cute little frames, but transliterates all of the "special" characters with a uniform space...
Does anyone know how to automagically delete frames in Word while leaving the frame contents intact? Paging through this thing and doing Cut&Paste 500 times doesn't feel particularly efficient...

*Not* Sponsored by the Letters Q and W
Nov. 7th, 2005 08:12 pmAn amusing (or scary?) item from Reuters via the Austin Area Translators Association
Turkish law bans Q and W
REUTERS REPORTED RECENTLY that a Turkish court
fined 20 people for using the letters Q and W on
placards at a Kurdish new year celebration, under a
law that bans use of characters not in the Turkish
alphabet.
Since Q and W do not exist in the Turkish
alphabet, the court in the southeastern city of Siirt
fined each of the 20 people 100 new lira ($75.53) for
holding up the placards, written in Kurdish, at the
event last year.
The 1928 Law on the Adoption and Application
of Turkish Letters replaced the traditional Arabic
script by a modified Latin alphabet and required all
signs, advertising, newspapers, and official documents
to use only Turkish letters.
Under pressure from the European Union, Turkey
has improved language and human rights for its
Kurdish minority, but the EU says implementation
has been patchy and loopholes remain.

Web Conducive to ADD?
Jan. 18th, 2005 02:08 pmA long websurfing session led me to the following meandering page on microships, but really about life, technology, and electronic gadgets.
Or, rather, to the google cache for the page, as the author spawns so many subsidiary windows (so the user can immediately follow links to everything that the author thought of while writing) that my browser simply refuses to open the actual page ("too many redirects").

Sep. 16th, 2004 09:35 amGiven my readership here at LJ :-), there's a risk of this post planting some serious earworms...
I've been listening a lot to Radio AENA at www.shoutcast.com--they play lots of neat medieval stuff (plus a lot of other, modern stuff based on medieval), mostly from European bands that I'd never heard of until now.
Today's earworms came from Scarazula (Istanpita Palamento) and Fidelius (Ungarisches Luegenlied), but there's lots of other good stuff from Freiburger Spielleyt, Wolfenmond, Duivelspack, Rabenschrey, and Corvus Corax. Subway to Sally seems to be very popular.

Thanksgiving Postponed
Nov. 28th, 2003 03:37 amWell, I tried to update, but the silly LJ software seems to require my coputer's clock to be set right. So *what* if my clock is off a few months?
THe error message also has the pleasant feature of erasing whatever you wrote in the process.
Trying again.
Will celebrate Thankshgiving later, too busy today.
MOre buses this weekend, hopefully followed by a thorough housecleaning, loading a truck, and successfully driving the truck where it needs to go.
Anyway, it's too late now...time for bed.

Good online find
Oct. 18th, 2003 03:13 pmA beautiful day here in Houston, high 70's, no humidity after yesterday's blue norther. I only went n to work for about three hours today
Anyway, for those wondering about the user name, here's a picture of my grandmother's house I found on line. I lived in this house for about six years--through Jr. High and High School. It's the white house in the background, just to the left of the church.
<\a Picture >
My connection to this place is slowly growing weaker, though...my grandmother died in 1988, and my step-grandfather died about three weeks ago...
Well, HTML obviously isn't my strong suit. I'm happy the link is clickable, but still wondering why the paragraph *after* the link is part of the link...

Silmaril makes this journal thing look so easy, I thought I'd try.
For those of you who are joining this mid-stream, I drove out to Houston last week looking for fame and fortune. Mostly fortune, as no one in DC has yet seen fit to actually hire me for anything that pays, but I wouldn't turn down a bit of fame, too.
On Friday, I got approved for full-time work on the Enormous Translation Project.
So I've been busy trying to get my life organized, finding an apartment or roommate situation that won't cost me $700 just to have my two cats with me (that was an actual quote from one apartment manager) through the winter...
And Clear Lake is reasonably nice.
